College Bowl Mania Series: UNT vs. Utah State

Bowl Mania is here! Here at SLM we take that very seriously. Be on the lookout for your favorite teams preview and breakdown.

Bowl Game Date: Dec 15th at 12pm

Utah State

Best Win: Hawaii was only 8-5 but looking at Utah’s schedule, it’s hard to find a key win, outside of this.

Worst Loss: Only had 2 losses but losing to Michigan State was tough. They lead for a large part of the game and looked like the better team.

What now: Utah State reached double digit wins vs a very top heavy Mountain West conference. They have now seen their Head coach Matt Wells depart for Texas Tech. We see interim coach Frank Maile take over with a skeleton crew. OC David Yost will call plays for the offense before departing for Texas Tech and Stacy Collins, former LB coach will call plays on the defensive side of the ball.

UNT

Best Win: While Arkansas went 2-10 on the season, they still beat an SEC team 45-17. Even though this was not an ideal season for Arkansas, this was a big win for UNT.

Worst Loss: Old Dominion were down huge early in the game and came back. If the Mean Green didn’t blow this game they would be sitting at 10 wins heading into the bowl game.

What Now: Seth Littrel has to be the hottest name left for coaching candidates. He has had a lot buzz around Kansas State but they seem reluctant to allow him to clear house. UNT have the Conference USA Offense Player of the Year at QB in Mason Fine. An under-sized, under-recruited QB who wants his first bowl win.

The Game: Who is more distracted? Team who’s lost their coach or the team who may lose their coach? Bowl games typically come down to which team has avoided distraction and focused on improving in practice. Both offenses can throw points up and it may come down to who can force a turnover late.

Best Bet: Points, points and more points. Both teams have top end quarterbacks and will want to put on a show. As mentioned earlier, Utah State has a first time defense coordinator calling the shots for the defense. I believe both offenses will be able to find success in all areas of offense. Punters can keep their helmets in the locker room for this one.
