Brace yourself…Spring training is coming!
The winter solstice takes place on December 21st each year, and marks (traditionally) the start of winter. The spring equinox is set to happen on March 20th, 2019. I write this on the 10th of February, over a month away from the first formal date of spring.
But baseball fans are different. They know that spring, effectively begins midway through February. This week on, February 12th, a full 2 days before lovers embrace to honor St. Valentine and while most of the country is shoveling snow from their driveways, is when pitchers and catchers report to spring training.
Ceremoniously, this date represents the first day of spring training for baseball fans, as your favorite pitchers and catchers arrive to moderate fanfare in Arizona or northern Florida.
To me, this is when spring really begins. The promise of rebirth, a season of fresh new opportunity; any number of possibilities await each team as they begin formal conditioning, drills, practices, and finally games in preparation for opening day.
That’s right, baseball fans, pitchers and catchers report on the 12th, and we are only 46 days away from opening day.
Buckle up, because it is going to get here quick.
Are you ready?
